Eduroam / e-U
e-U Virtual Campus is an innitiative launched by the portuguese government, and involves services, contents, applications and a wireless network (inside and outside the University) for students, teachers and researchers.
In Portugal, eduroam has been treated in the scope of the e-U Virtual Campus initiative, a project partially funded by the Portuguese government through a program called "Plano de Acção para a Sociedade do Conhecimento - POSC" - (Action Plan for Knowledge Society), coordinated by UMIC - Agência para a Sociedade do Conhecimento (Agency for Knowledge Society) and developed and maintained by FCCN.
At its genesis, as currently, the national eduroam continues to be FCCN's technical responsibility, funded by FCT / MEC.
The e-U Virtual Campus initiative aims to massify the to online academic contents and the use of wireless access technologies through the development of services, contents, applications and mobile communication netwoks, in and out of the universities, to all academic students and teachers who stimulate and assist the production, access and sharing of knowledge. This initiative also aims to join all the academic networks from all higher educations institutions creating a "anytime, anywhere" academic network.
The interest in extending eduroam to other communities outside the European borders has been increasingly evident, and as a result of this growing interest a non European eduroam was created - in Australia.
