DNS.PT
FCCN is responsible for the management, registration and maintenance of domains under the TLD. PT, top level domain corresponding to Portugal.
This responsibility arises from the delegation made by the IANA - Internet Assigned Numbers Authority and has been confirmed and recognized by ICANN - Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers.
Overview
The DNS.PT is since 1991 a fundamental pillar of the Portuguese Internet Community and has as a mission the development of the Internet in Portugal, based on providing a quality service, pursuing a policy of innovation and technological update and insuring the correct technical and administrative management of the name space under the TLD .PT. The domain name constitutes a right.
The right to the domain name is an exclusive right of use by its registrant. Currently, a domain name is a real added value, is essential and helps increase the visibility of any company, brand, project or initiative.
Promotes and disseminates the Portuguese identity in the world, making known what is best made in Portugal.
What is a Domain
The domain name was created in order to make it easier to memorize computer addresses in the Internet. Imagine if you had to memorize a number like 2001:690:a00:4001::200 (IP address) and insert it in a browser bar in order to look up the FCCN website and then still had to memorize various other number sequences of websites that you use regularly.
It would be quite a difficult task and the Web certainly would not be as successful as it is today. Typing fccn.pt, dns.pt or google.com is quite intuitive and easy to memorize.
