THE The Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) submitted to UNESCO the first national report on the “Implementation of the 2021 UNESCO Recommendation on Open Science”, marking an important step in the dissemination of Open Science in Portugal.
THE UNESCO Recommendation on Open Science, adopted in 2021, highlights the fundamental role of Open Science as a tool for improving the quality and accessibility of scientific results and processes. This document establishes guidelines and objectives to transform scientific practices, encouraging greater collaboration, transparency, and knowledge sharing.
To prepare this report, the FCT relied on the collaboration of the scientific community, promoting a public consultation that allowed the collection and integration of relevant contributions, enriching the content and scope of this document, now available for consultation on the FCT website.
The report addresses several priority areas identified by UNESCO, including promoting a shared understanding of the benefits and challenges of Open Science. It also emphasizes the creation of a conducive policy environment that fosters more inclusive and accessible scientific practices, as well as investment in infrastructure and services dedicated to Open Science. Training human resources, strengthening digital literacy, and empowering researchers and professionals are also considered fundamental pillars for ensuring the success of these practices.
Additionally, the document emphasizes the importance of international and multisectoral cooperation to reduce digital, technological, and knowledge inequalities, promoting global inclusion in access to science.
With this initiative, Portugal reaffirms its position in the global Open Science movement, aligning itself with the principles established by UNESCO and strengthening its commitment to the advancement of knowledge and scientific innovation, both nationally and internationally.
