THE NAU, digital service of the Foundation for Science and Technology, developed by FCCN, assigned the first DOI to a MOOC (Massive Open Online Course – Massive Open Online Course) resulting from a research project.

The training that received the distinction was developed by the Institute of Medieval Studies (IEM), a research unit linked to NEW FCSH and is designated “Portugal in the Middle Ages: a kingdom with democratic municipalities and no cities?”.

This online course attracted over 2,400 registrants from 25 countries across the Americas, Africa, Europe, and Asia, with a pass rate that, according to the Nova University of Lisbon team, "largely exceeded that predicted by scientific studies on this type of training"—281 T7T, compared to the predicted 51 T7T. "This is also the first MOOC in Portugal, and, as far as we know, internationally, to receive a DOI," the team adds.

"Besides recognizing the quality of the work developed and the IEM's capacity for innovation, this award allows us—and now other research units in the Portuguese-speaking world—to continue pursuing our mission of sharing and making available, through open, free access, and in Portuguese, rigorous, certified, up-to-date, and original information to diverse audiences. These are fundamental elements for building a more inclusive and informed society and, in the case of History, for combating anachronistic interpretations and misappropriations of the past." conclude the researchers in charge Gonçalo Miguel Silva and Adelaide Millan Costa.

The assignment of DOIs to MOOCs resulting from research projects

The DOI (Digital Object Identifier) is a unique digital identifier that guarantees permanent reference to digital documents or objects, regardless of any changes to hyperlinks. Widely used in scientific publications, DOI facilitates citation, access, and traceability of content, promoting academic collaboration and contributing to the recognition and reputation of authors.

Producing a MOOC based on a research project is an effective strategy for expanding scientific dissemination and increasing the impact of the results obtained. By reaching a broad and diverse audience, they promote open science, transparency, and accessibility to knowledge.

This strategy is also a way to meet funding requirements related to public dissemination and ensures the sustainability of the results, which remain available in the long term. When associated with a DOI, MOOC content also becomes easily citable and recognized, contributing to the visibility of researchers. involved and the institution to which they are affiliated.

FCT's digital service, NAU, is co-financed by the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR).
