Created in 2015, PTCRIS, a digital service of the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), developed by FCCN, was born with a clear objective: to promote interoperability between scientific information systems in Portugal and worldwide, reducing redundancies and giving time back to research.
Over the course of a decade, it has established itself as the national platform for scientific interoperability, connecting people, institutions, and systems. Today, the PTCRIS ecosystem brings together various services and platforms—from CIÊNCIAVITAE to the Institutional Indicators Service (SII)—and is internationally recognized as a success story in the integrated management of scientific information.
To mark this date, Here are 10 key moments that marked these 10 years of evolution and innovation.
10 years, 10 milestones
1. Development of the PTCRISync framework
The development of PTCRISync, In 2016, it enabled the automatic synchronization of data between national systems and the ORCID, materializing the principle "Register once, reuse multiple times" and established the foundation for interoperability within the PTCRIS ecosystem.
2. Consolidation of CIÊNCIAVITAE within the national scientific ecosystem.
THE CIÊNCIAVITAELaunched in 2018, it unified the scientific curriculum of Portuguese researchers. Its adoption in the competitions of FCT, in 2019, and integration, in 2020, in Innovation Portal They transformed it into a central instrument for scientific evaluation and for linking science and economics.
3. Launch of the Institutional Indicators Service (SII)
With 69 signatory entities, the SII, Released in 2021, It has established itself as an essential tool for monitoring and analyzing national scientific activity.
4. Integration of CIÊNCIAVITAE with institutional CRIS systems
The first integration, in 2019, with the system SCIENCE IUL, of the ISCTE-IULThis demonstrated the maturity of the PTCRIS framework and the feasibility of full interoperability between institutional and national systems.
5. Expanding interoperability and synchronization with ORCID
In 2022, Portugal became world leader in ORCID adoption, with hundreds of thousands of records automatically synchronized through the CIÊNCIAVITAE, reinforcing the international impact of the PTCRIS model.
6. Grant DOI assignment service
THE FCT It began, starting in 2023, to assign Two to funding, reinforcing the transparency and traceability of public investment in science.
7. Adoption of CIÊNCIAVITAE by A3ES
The integration of scientific curricula into the A3ES accreditation system – Agency for Assessment and Accreditation of Higher Education -, in 2024, strengthened the articulation between the scientific evaluation and the institutional evaluation in higher education.
8. Launch of the SciPROJ Portal
Already in 2025, the SciPROJ It emerges as a new national platform for the integrated management and analysis of science funding, incorporating value-added services and artificial intelligence In service of transparency and decision-making.
9. 195,000 hours saved with PTCRIS interoperability
The estimate of 195,000 hours saved per year demonstrates the concrete impact of the principle "Register once, reuse multiple times", translating into efficiency gains and time returned to science.
10. International recognition of the PTCRIS ecosystem
Portugal is today a global reference in scientific interoperabilitythe CIÊNCIAVITAE added funding metadata to nearly 200,000 ORCID records, becoming the largest aggregator of training and development in these registries. The Cooperation Agreement with CNPq (Brazil) It reinforces the international recognition of the PTCRIS model.
Throughout this decade, PTCRIS has thus consolidated its vision of a A more connected, efficient, and transparent scienceThe path taken is the result of continuous collaboration between researchers, institutions, services, and technical teams, who together have shaped an expanding ecosystem.
