The FCCN Unit Service for recording, editing and publishing educational videos has a new website, which brings with it new features. The new Educast website offers a series of added value to the RCTS community.
From the outset, this new portal facilitates access to videos produced by the national academic and scientific community, with a main focus on improving content searches on the platform, namely through a tag system.
The content, moreover, is more prominent in the new version of the landing page, reveals the service manager, Nelson Schäller, adding that the new page includes “a dark mode and one look and feel more modern and bold”, and is also responsive on all devices: smartphones, tablets and desktop.
There are also significant improvements to content search, which now uses the Solr search platform. Furthermore, there is now better integration between the various service components (portal, content manager, player, and HTML5 editor), as well as the inclusion of more scientific fields.
The news also concerns the focus on the format of streaming (with custom layouts, playback speed control, chapters, hyperlinks, etc.) and simplified navigation. Federated authentication technology has also been included in both the portal and the content manager.
In 2021, the Educast recorded approximately 10,000 published educational videos, totaling 548,008 minutes of production. During the same period, more than 13,000 new users were registered and approximately 1,000 new channels were created.
The Educast service is also developing a new recorder video system compatible with various operating systems, which will be launched during the first four months of 2022, and which will allow the recording of audio, video and data synchronously, thus giving greater autonomy in the production of audiovisual content to the various participating institutions.
We would like to remind you that this service aims to provide the academic community with a platform dedicated to the production of audiovisual and multimedia content for educational and non-commercial purposes. It has been an essential tool throughout the pandemic, with the shift from in-person to online classes.
Recorded classes can be easily integrated into e-Learning systems, portals, and websites of higher education institutions, and the videos are available through the portal to students and the general public.
