The fundamental role of archives in society is highlighted today, June 9th, on International Archives Day. On this day, we recall the impact of the Arquivo.pt Award.
It was in 2018 that the first edition of the Arquivo.pt AwardSince then, over the course of five years, this award has recognized 15 research projects that utilize information preserved by this FCCN Unit service. A total of €75,000 in prizes has been awarded.
The purpose of the Arquivo.pt Award is to recognize innovative work that research and access services made publicly available by Arquivo.pt and clearly demonstrate the usefulness of the service.
Have the Arquivo.pt as a primary source of information is the only criterion, with no subject restrictions. Over the course of the various editions, papers focusing on fields such as Education, History, Sociology, Communication, Health, and IT, for example, have been recognized. "For us, it's great to see such diverse use of Arquivo.pt in a wide range of areas," emphasized Arquivo.pt manager Daniel Gomes.

2018
Tell Me Stories
The "Tell Me Stories" project was created by the team led by Ricardo Campos and featuring Arian Pasquali, Vítor Mangaravite, Alípio Jorge, and Adam Jatowt. This online service uses 24 electronic news sources (national newspapers and portals), offering users a temporal narrative based on news stories on any topic (e.g., the Troika in Portugal). The results can be explored using a timeline and a set of relevant words within the search topic.

“Tell Me Stories”
myParliament.pt
THE myParliament.pt is a mobile application that simulates the Portuguese Parliament, inviting all citizens to play the role of a representative. The app simulates the plenary session of the Assembly of the Republic and allows citizens to learn about and vote on legislative proposals presented in the Portuguese Parliament over the past decade, learning which parties share their views. The work was created by Nuno Moniz, Arian Pasquali, and Tomás Amaro.

Developed by Miguel Ramalho, “Desarquivo” is a website that allows you to search for entities (e.g., people, organizations, and places) and identify relationships between them, based on news published in online newspapers over time. Search results are presented in the form of a graph or network of relationships that allow a journalist, researcher or any other citizen to dynamically explore the relationships between historical information preserved on the Web by Arquivo.pt.

Major Minors
Developed by Paulo Martins and Leandro Costa, "Major Minors" is an ontology of press clippings from Portuguese newspapers that reference social minorities. This work aims to map and study the representation of minorities in Portuguese journalism throughout the first two decades of the 21st century. For example, a user can view archived news articles that mention minorities.

Parliament Archives
The winner of the 2022 edition of the Arquivo.pt Award was the work “Parliament Archives” developed by Tiago Santos. “Parliament Archive” is a web application that aggregates news and opinion articles extracted from the Arquivo.pt based on open data from Parlamento.ptFor example, a user can search for a political figure and obtain speeches, news, and other publications that Arquivo.pt has preserved.
