Minister of Youth and Modernization met with the supercomputer management and operations team

On February 7, the Minister of Youth and Modernization, Margarida Balseiro Lopes, visited the Portuguese supercomputer Deucalion facilities in Guimarães. The visit, which included a meeting with the team operating the facility, was part of a series of contacts established with the University of Minho (UMinho) aimed at consolidating national strategies in the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI).

The Deucalion supercomputer, inaugurated in September 2023, is funded by the Recovery and Resilience Plan and managed by the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) with the support of UMinho. It has the capacity to perform 10 million trillion calculations per second. It is therefore a fundamental tool for the production of excellent science and innovation in Portugal across various fields, contributing positively to the development of public policies related to modernization, innovation, and entrepreneurship.

Deucalion is now also accessible to researchers who wish to enhance their projects by leveraging this innovative computational resource. Applications for access to the A2 and A3 5th Advanced Computing Project Competition, managed by FCT, through its digital services unit FCCN, are open until March 11, 2025.
