More than 120 participants from around the world gathered in Lisbon for the 2025 edition of the International HPC Summer School (IHPCSS) – an intensive training initiative in high-performance computing, with the support of FCCN, FCT digital services, as host entity.
Between the days July 6th and 11th, Lisbon was the stage for the International HPC Summer School 2025, one of the most prestigious international advanced training programs in the areas of high-performance computing (HPC), artificial intelligence, Big Data and scientific visualizationThe event brought together more than 90 postgraduate students, researchers, and renowned experts from Europe, North America, Japan, and Australia in the Portuguese capital.
THE FCCN, FCT digital services, played a prominent role as an entity host and institutional partner, actively contributing to the success of the local organization of the event.
The realization of the IHPCSS in Lisbon represented further recognition of Portugal's growing role in the international scientific computing landscape, driven by strategic investments such as the supercomputer Deucalion, financed by the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR) and managed by FCT with the support of UMinho, and by the activity carried out by FCT and the National Center for Advanced Computing (CNCA) in the development of national advanced computing strategies.
Throughout the week, participants were accompanied by internationally renowned mentors and joined multidisciplinary working groups, promoting collaboration between scientific fields and countries. They had access to practical and theoretical sessions on topics such as parallel programming with MPI and OpenMP, performance optimization on CPUs and GPUs, machine learning and deep learning with TensorFlow, use of scientific libraries and tools for analyzing and visualizing large volumes of data.
To the FCCN Advanced Computing and Marketing & Communication teams, FCT digital services were involved from the preparatory stages, collaborating with the international organization in carrying out this prestigious event.
The realization of the International HPC Summer School in Lisbon further reinforces Portugal's role as host of leading scientific events and highlights the importance of international collaboration in developing advanced computing skills.
