“The Past Web,” available from September on b-on, a service managed by the FCCN unit of the FCT, presents an updated vision on digital preservation of the web, a subject that had not had a book published since 2006..
The book provides practical information about web archives, offers inspiring examples, raises new challenges, and shares the results of recent research on access methods that allow us to explore past information now preserved by web archives.
Daniel Gomes, manager of Arquivo.pt, a digital preservation service for the Internet, managed by the FCCN Unit of the Science and Technology Foundation (FCT), led the editorial team for the book "The Past Web – Exploring Web Archives." The publication is now available for download exclusively for members until March 6th. b-on service, which is also managed by the FCCN Unit.
This book is aimed at the Teaching and Research community and explores the theme of Digital Preservation of the Web, applied to various areas of research – from Social Sciences to Studies of Average, including Information Science, Computer Science, and History. One of the book's main objectives is to support teachers in their mission to impart innovative knowledge appropriate for digital literacy, as well as to aid in the training of professionals for the 21st century.
The book is divided into six parts, featuring various resources for accessing archived files on the internet, from the 1990s to the present day. It also includes techniques for preserving collective memory in the digital age, strategies to use when selecting online content, and the impact of web archives on preserving content with long histories.

Daniel Gomes also highlights the need to include web archives in school curricula and emphasizes the numerous advantages of incorporating this content into school curricula as a means of acquiring digital skills and literacy.
An innovative detail found in this work is the fact that all cited links are also preserved by Arquivo.pt, in order to ensure the validity of the references over time.
