The Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), through its FCCN unit, will open applications for the 4th edition of the Advanced Computing Projects Competition on October 26th. This competition aims to provide Advanced Computing resources for Research and Innovation and is a collaboration with the operational centers of National Advanced Computing Network (RNCA), including the Advanced Computing Laboratory of the University of Coimbra (LCA-UC), High Performance Computing of the University of Évora (HPC-UÉ) and the National Infrastructure for Distributed Computing (INCD).
This year, 2 new platforms debut and the typology is inaugurated Larger Dimension (A3), which will give access to newly installed Deucalion and MareNostrum 5, the latter installed in the Barcelona Supercomputing Center.
More than 300 million CPU core hours or vCPU hours are up for grabs and applications will be accepted in all scientific areas using High Performance Computing (HPC) and/or scientific Cloud or Virtual Research Environments (VRE) into four distinct typologies:
- Experimental Access (A0) – 6-month projects for users with little or no prior experience. Several application batches between October 26, 2023, and May 30, 2024.
- Access Development (A1) – Projects up to 12 months for testing and optimizing computational work. Several application batches between October 26, 2023, and May 30, 2024
- Regular Access (A2) – for research and innovation projects of up to 3 million CPU core hours over 12 months. Applications open between October 26, 2023, and December 19, 2023.
- Larger Size Access (A3) – for large research and innovation projects up to 20 million CPU core hours for 12 months on Deucalion and MareNostrum 5. Applications between 12/19/2023 and 2/8/2024.
The Advanced Computing Project Competitions seek to encourage the use of HPC and Scientific Cloud (VRE) computing resources to obtain new knowledge that enables scientific and technological advancement in all fields. These resources can be useful for simulations in areas as diverse as climate and molecular modeling, artificial intelligence, and the study of complex problems in the creation of new materials or the improvement of industrial production lines.
Previous editions have approved more than 350 projects and 110 million CPU core hours on computing platforms. RNCA.
