THE European Commission launched Frontier AI Grand Challenge, a new European competition aimed at boosting the development of cutting-edge Artificial Intelligence (AI) models in Europe. The initiative is promoted in conjunction with EuroHPC Joint Undertaking (EuroHPC JU) and fits within the European strategy Apply AI Strategy, reinforcing the European Union's ambition to consolidate its technological sovereignty and global competitiveness in AI.
A European challenge for large-scale generative AI models.
The competition provides funding for a single European project capable of developing and training a large-scale generative AI model — designed Frontier AI — with applications in multiple scientific, industrial, and social domains.
The goal is to reduce Europe's dependence on external technological solutions, promoting the development of its own capabilities and strengthening a robust, competitive European AI ecosystem aligned with the values of the European Union.
The proposed models should have at least 400 billion parameters, resorting to efficient and modular architectures, such as Mixture of Experts, which allow combining high performance with optimized computational resources.
Access to leading European supercomputing
The selected project will have access to up to 2.5% of the total computing capacity of the EuroHPC JU for one year., through the European network of supercomputers optimized for AI, and to specialized and complementary services from AI Factories. This access to computing resources guarantees technical conditions comparable to those used in the development of the most advanced AI models globally.
Among the systems currently integrated into the European infrastructure are supercomputers such as the JUPITER and the Alice Recoque, which are part of the ecosystem of resources made available by EuroHPC.
To the Applications can be submitted until April 13, 2026, at 5:00 PM CET (4 PM in Lisbon).
Included in the European strategy for an "AI continent"
THE Frontier AI Grand Challenge integrates into AI Continent Action Plan, a strategic initiative of the European Commission aimed at positioning the European Union as a true “AI continent”, strengthening infrastructure, talent and innovation capacity.
The competition is implemented under the European project AI-BOOST, which supports strategic initiatives in the field of advanced and high-performance AI.
A growing European ecosystem
In addition to supercomputing infrastructure, EuroHPC supports the creation of AI Factories and AI Factory Antennas in several Member States, promoting access to specialized resources, technical training and support for the development of innovative solutions by startups, SMEs and public administration.
Recently, with the adoption of Council Regulation (EU) 2026/150The mandate of EuroHPC has been extended to include the development of AI Gigafactories — large-scale industrial infrastructures dedicated to AI — as well as strengthening European capabilities in quantum technologies.
With this new competition, the European Union gives Another strategic step in consolidating a world-class digital infrastructure., capable of supporting the development of advanced Artificial Intelligence models designed and trained in Europe.
