An Internet Exchange Point is a neutral point of traffic exchange between organizations, allows multiple IP networks to interconnect more efficiently.
GigaPIX improves the quality IP network interconnection in Portugal and avoids the use of international resources for IP packet traffic with Portugal as both origin and destination.
Without an infrastructure such as GigaPIX, the traffic with geographically close origin and destination would, in most cases, have to cross borders, resulting in less efficient (and more expensive) communications.
Cost reduction for participating networks is one of the main advantages of GigaPIX, but there is also a reduction in latency. GigaPIX makes local communications faster.
GigaPIX is a new generation of PIX (Portuguese Internet eXchange) created on September 1995. The name was changed in 2001 and reflects the fact that the infrastructure changed to ports with Gigabit capacity.
Currently, FCCN provides GigaPIX to dozens of networks, distributed by the Lisbon and Oporto data centres, with individual Gbps, 1Gbps and 100 Mbps ports.
