What is the Eduroam Network?
The main objective of the eduroam (Education Roaming) network is to provide the academic community with a wireless network service, available between participating institutions.
Who can join the Eduroam network?
All institutions connected to the RCTS network (RCTS IP Service) can join.
What are the costs of this service?
There are no additional costs for entities subscribing to the RCTS IP service.
Which institutions are currently using Eduroam?
The eduroam network is currently available in 76 countries. In Portugal, 61 institutions have joined this service. Almost all educational institutions and state laboratories in Portugal offer access to this network. The list of locations can be found here.
How is authentication performed on the Eduroam network?
Authentication is performed at the user's home institution, using their institutional credentials.
What devices can be used on the Eduroam network?
Any mobile device (laptop/phone/tablet) can be used to connect to the eduroam network.

I already have a connection to a commercial ISP. Can I continue using the same addresses by subscribing to the RCTS IP service?
No. The RCTS IP service only provides service to IP addresses owned by RCTS or the organizations themselves. In the event of a commercial ISP shutdown, and the address is not owned by the organization, the address will have to be "returned" to the commercial ISP.
What is “academic traffic” and “commercial traffic” in the context of the RCTS IP service?
"Commercial traffic" refers to communications originating from networks that are not research and teaching networks, nor do they belong to entities that have a direct traffic exchange link with RCTS or the GÉANT Network. "Academic traffic" refers to all other traffic originating from other sources.
Does the RCTS IP service include management of my firewall?
No, no type of filtering is performed when delivering the service.
What are the costs of the service?
Costs are calculated according to the nature of the proposing organization, its geographical location and the tariff in force.
Is there any loyalty period associated?
Yes, the minimum stay period is 12 months. After this period, any request to terminate the contract must be made with 30 days' notice.
