What does the Lightning Talks Challenge?

GÉANT and FCCN invite Portuguese higher education students to participate in the Lightning Talk Challenge (LTC)project through which they will be able to share your ideas and study/research projects in the area of technologies, namely IT or computer networks. For more information, visit the page dedicated to the initiative.

What is TCN20?

THE TNC20 takes place in Brighton, UK, June 8–12. This is the largest gathering of experts in collaboration and networking, policymakers, representatives of higher education institutions and the technology industry, as well as managers of the world's leading academic and research networks (NRENs).

What does the student gain by participating?

Participating in the largest and most prestigious academic networking conference is, in itself, a rewarding challenge and an enriching experience. In addition to this opportunity, there is also a training opportunity involved. Selected students will receive support from GLAD of GÉANT – GÉANT Learning and Development team – with three courses/webinars on how to write proposals and how to speak in public.

Are there any associated costs?

No. If your proposal is selected, you will travel free of charge to the 3-day conference, organized by GÉANT – the entity that manages the European academic network. Conference admission, accommodation, meals, and travel expenses will be fully covered.

Have there been any Portuguese people participating?

There have been Portuguese participations since 2017. In 2019, the student of the University of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro (UTAD), António Ferreira, was selected by FCCN and GÉANT to to present at TNC19 in Tallinn, Estonia, your project of machine learning for identification of forest and agricultural species.

For the student, participating in the world's largest networking conference was “inspiring” and “rewarding.” "I met new people, talked about my project with people I'd never met before, and asked other speakers about their projects. It was all great."“, he adds.

This is the fourth edition of LTC, a project that is part of GÉANT's Future Talent Programme. The objective of this program, the European network emphasizes, is to “prepare young professionals to make an impact on an audience through their idea, project or research“.
