Within the scope of the challenge Lightning Talks, promoted by GÉANT and, in Portugal, by FCCN, digital services of FCT, Ricardo Veiga presented his research work at TNC24, the world's largest networking conference, which took place from June 10 to 14.
An investigation that studies the seabed
Rennes, France, was chosen as the location for the 2024 edition of the TNC. On the third day of the event, in a brief 5-minute presentation, Ricardo Veiga made known his research work dedicated to creation of a way of monitoring the ocean floor that uses automation and computing technologies cloud.
Through this groundbreaking research, it becomes possible to implement a dynamic system that recognizes the specificities of the various underwater regions. “This is a significant step towards more sustainable ocean management”, reveals the student, in his application.
After participating, the PhD student in Computer Engineering at the University of Algarve answered some questions about this experience, also addressing young people who are also thinking about seizing this opportunity.

What was your experience at TNC like?
The experience has been fantastic and transformative, as it has pushed me beyond my comfort zone. The program team has helped me immensely, including improving my communication skills.
What is the outcome of the presentation and how can it contribute to the implementation of the idea?
My presentation was very challenging to deliver, but it was motivating to be able to spread the word about what I've been doing over the past few years. It's incredibly positive to contribute to a better world, one in which we can create more global connections and collaboration, rather than a narrow, localized investigation where results are limited to a single location.
What message would you leave for other young people who are considering signing up for this initiative?
I think you should challenge yourselves. You should believe in yourselves and the research you're doing. You have a platform here to project everything you've done and create new connections. You can meet people who will help you in the future and have new career opportunities here and, perhaps, find new places that will direct you on a new path.
