The FCCN initiative aims to promote the adoption of good environmental practices and more sustainable alternative technologies. Learn all about the project.
“Using ICT intelligently, promoting sustainability, is strategic to the mission of FCCN and its employees”This is how FCCN General Coordinator, João Nuno Ferreira, defines the starting context of the FCCN + Sustainable project. This initiative aims to strengthen the FCCN Unit's alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
As part of the FCCN +Sustentável project, the FCCN Unit created an environmental policy that integrates 14 commitment principles, aiming to contribute to the sustainability of the country and the world. Assessing fleet energy performance, creating recycling points, installing water filtration machines, and measuring the environmental footprint are some of the steps already taken. It was possible to record that, between 2016 and 2022, for example, the environmental footprint per employee fell by 75%.
To further deepen the search for sustainable practices, under the FCCN +Sustentável project, FCCN conducted an internal pre-assessment questionnaire. The responses revealed measures already adopted in the workplace and in the personal lives of employees, in addition to noting suggestions for new practices to implement.
There are currently 13 measures underway, out of a total of 26 planned short- to medium-term measures within the scope of the FCCN +Sustentável project. The end result will be the creation and implementation of an environmental policy for the FCCN Unit, a three-year action plan based on four pillars: environmental, economic, social, and sustainability. The actions, which involve all FCCN Unit employees, aim to inform and raise awareness, implement good practices and establish partnerships.
The objective of the FCCN +Sustentável project is to demonstrate that Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) can be a driving force for a better and more sustainable future, even though they are one of the sectors with the highest energy consumption and consequent impact on the environment.
