THE 17th conference of the Spanish Supercomputing Network (RES) took place on September 13th and 14th in Barcelona, next to the Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC).
As a partner of RES, RNCA was represented by the Advanced Computing team from FCCN and collaborators from INESC TEC/University of Minho/MACC.
The nearly 200 participants, many of whom were users and technicians at the centers, enjoyed a variety of thematic sessions that covered Artificial Intelligence, Quantum Computing, the new European processor based on RISC-V technology, technological innovations, and the energy efficiency of supercomputing centers.
A guided tour was held of MareNostrum 5 and MareNostrum 4, the latter still in operation inside the Girona chapel. Starting in 2024, the chapel will receive two quantum computers through a Spanish and European initiative, one of which will involve Portuguese participation via the International Nanotechnology Laboratory (INL).
Next door, in the new BSC building, was the installation of Mare Nostrum 5, which is expected to be inaugurated soon and available in early 2024. This new 300 Petaflops supercomputer represents a joint effort of the EuroHPC initiative with Spain, Turkey, and Portugal.
Several RES centers, such as the RNCA in Portugal, participate in the European HPC Competence Center project – EuroCC – and there was an opportunity to share experiences and contacts among everyone.
Congratulations to BSC and RES for the excellent organization of the event and see you next year…in Malaga.
