Platform created by the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) and the The Clinical Research and Biomedical Innovation Agency (AICIB) is another tool in the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic.
THE Science 4 COVID-19 consists of a platform that brings together ideas, publications and ongoing actions in the fight against the Covid-19 outbreak, as well as the identification of available installed capacity and respective research groups.
The objective also involves to make available online collaborative work tools, enabling direct communication mechanisms between all users, promoting interaction and collaboration.
As the Minister of Science, Technology and Higher Education, Manuel Heitor, recalls in his preface signed on the portal, in the current context, it is important to “mobilize researchers and their institutions with the necessary capacity to effectively carry out ongoing efforts”. On the other hand, he adds, it is essential to "mobilize other national scientific and technological institutes, companies, and health professionals to ensure the effective implementation of the various actions."
In this way, the digital platform Science 4 COVID-19 compiles resources available for use in Research and Development (R&D) projects and activities aimed at combating the Covid-19 pandemic caused by the new coronavirus, in line with the National Disease Preparedness and Response Plan of the Directorate-General for Health (DGS), as well as with the strategies of other European and international health authorities.
The portal brings together a wide range of initiatives from the Portuguese scientific community. From social and supportive character (such as identifying and making personal protective equipment available to healthcare professionals), passing through engineering (such as the adaptation, development and manufacture of different ventilator models) and the clinical and biomedical area (such as new tracking protocols), until the communication (such as the creation of informative and educational materials about the new coronavirus to be disseminated in PALOP countries).
Scientific validation
Through this portal, anyone interested can share ideas, actions, and publications to combat Covid-19. These contributions are then validated by a technical and scientific validation committee. resorting whenever necessary to entities of recognized scientific and professional merit to support the analysis and classification of initiatives submitted in the various specific areas of application.
This committee is made up of Catarina Oliveira (President of the Board of Directors of AICIB), Patricia Calado (Member of the AICIB Board of Directors), Cristina Abreu Santos (Member of the Board of Directors of the Ricardo Jorge Institute) and Nuno Feixa Rodrigues (Member of the FCT Board of Directors).
