In response to widespread power outage that occurred on April 28, 2025, FCCN, digital services of the Foundation for Science and Technology, quickly took measures to ensure connectivity and other digital services considered most critical.

Although improved network redundancy allowed for shorter periods of connectivity downtime, an outage of this magnitude and duration resulted in service interruptions. At the main network node in Lisbon, the downtime was significantly reduced, but not completely, resulting in a power outage between 4:13 PM and 6:05 PM. All non-essential equipment had previously been turned off to reduce the electrical load.

After public power returned at 8:39 p.m., the FCCN team began work to check and restore all services, a process that continued throughout the morning of April 29th due to several malfunctions. However, by the end of April 28th, most of the backbone was already operational, and international connectivity via GÉANT was restored overnight.

FCCN thanks the entire community for their understanding of what happened and is available to clarify any doubts or further information needs that may arise.
