In response to the widespread power failure that occurred on April 28, 2025, the FCCN, the digital services of the Foundation for Science and Technology, took swift action to ensure connectivity and other digital services considered most critical.
Although the improved redundancy of the network allowed for shorter periods of unavailability of connectivity, a failure of this extent and duration meant that services were disrupted. At the network's main node, in Lisbon, it was possible to significantly reduce the period of unavailability, but not completely, with the power going out between 16:13 and 18:05. Previously, all the equipment we consider non-essential had already been switched off, in order to reduce the necessary electrical load.
After the power came back on at 8:39 p.m., the FCCN team started checking and restoring all the services, a process that lasted until the morning of April 29, due to some faults. However, by the end of April 28, most of the backbone was operational, and international connectivity via GÉANT was restored during the night.
The FCCN would like to thank the entire community for their understanding of what has happened and is available to answer any questions or further information needs.
