From March 1st, the FCCN Unit will celebrate the contributions of women in the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) fields, joining the campaign of its European counterpart, the GÉANT network.
The month of March is internationally recognized as Women's History Month (Women's History Month). “This is the perfect opportunity to celebrate the contributions of women in STEM fields and to empower future generations to increase female representation,” explains GÉANT.
For this reason, GÉANT and its community of NRENs will be running the #WomenInStem campaign throughout March, sharing brief testimonials from participants of various nationalities and other longer interviews. The various contributions will be published on GÉANT's social media channels, addressing topics such as the importance of diversity, the challenges and obstacles women face, and the power of female collaboration.
During the month of March, the FCCN Unit joins again to this campaign and will also publish several testimonies from women working in science and research.
With this campaign, we also seek to emphasize an important point about why these fields still need more male allies to advocate for greater gender equality:
Without men joining the conversation and contributing to promoting female representation in these fields, this topic becomes simply treated as a "women's issue," discussed only by women and for a strictly female audience—which is clearly not the goal. Since men still dominate STEM fields in numbers, they need to be integral in the effort to create more supportive and inclusive workplaces.
