In 2023, there were several achievements in the more than 20 digital services that the Foundation for Science and Technology, through its FCCN unit, makes available to the national education and research community. Here are some of the milestones that we would like to highlight and which have contributed to promoting "Technology for Knowledge".

More than 600,000 higher education students and teachers have used the Science, Technology and Society Network (RCTS) at FCCN. By integrating this national education network, the research and teaching community has had access to greater communication, collaboration, security and the development of new scientific knowledge.

Growth in Connectivity

In 2023, more than 200 entities connected to the internet at speeds of up to 100 Gbps, through the RCTS IPthe data communication service that connects education and science institutions to the global Internet. As for Eduroamservice, which guarantees secure Internet access for students, teachers, researchers and institutional employees, there was exponential growth in 2023, with around 114 million roaming authentications, which is equivalent to an 86.9% increase compared to 2022.

More impact on national computing

Through the National Advanced Computing Network 42 million core hours have been allocated to research on supercomputers, 20% more than in 2022. The RCTS Housingservice, which makes it possible to house computers in Datacenters, also stood out in 2023, allowing 116 racks to be housed in these facilities.

More collaboration in the teaching and research community

The service's annual review Filesender service was positive, with a milestone of 112,000 GigaBites of multimedia content shared by the community.

In multimedia services, there were several highlights: the number of hours of recording in the HD Studio grew compared to last year - by 58.6% - to a total of 568 hours, and the Videocast service saw 21,000 hours of live events broadcast, more than the 14,000 hours recorded in 2022. O Colibri hosted 1.3 million meetings and webinars over the last 12 months.

FCCN 's services made it possible to create more knowledge in 2023

A NAUa pioneering e-learning platform in Portugal, had 59,000 new users and 202,000 registrations for its online courses, both figures having increased compared to 2022. The Arquivo.ptwhich allows you to search and access preserved web pages, had 1.9 million pageviews in 2023, 100,000 more than in 2022

The service Educastservice, which offers the possibility of recording, editing and publishing educational videos, has grown and around 5,000 videos have been produced. The online knowledge library b-on recorded 20 million downloads of scientific articles in 2023. O RCAAP- Portugal's Open Access Scientific Repositories - reached the milestone of 770,000 scientific contents in open access, 100,000 more than in 2022, and the service Ciência VITAEservice, a national system for managing scientific CVs, registered around 11,500 new science CVs

Security highlights in 2023

The service RCTS CERTservice, responsible for managing cybersecurity incidents within the RCTS network, and the RCTS Certificatesservice, which certifies entities, had positive results. The former reported and validated 350 cybersecurity incidents, while RCTS Certificates issued 8,500 security certificates during the year

More participants and speakers at FCCN 2023

Finally, we would like to highlight the evolution of the main annual event for the academic and research community, the Jornadas FCCN. In the 2023 edition, the event had 569 participants, 11% more than in 2022. There were 29 sessions over three days and 32 sponsors were present. The initiative had 120 speakers, compared to 37 in 2022.

These were just some of the many positive milestones for the FCCN unit in 2023. The ambition to continue promoting "Technology for Knowledge" remains for the new year.
